Production
The Agricultural Cooperative of Zagora Pelion is an officially recognized producer group organization and consists of 780 member-producers who cultivate more than 12,000 acres of land. The Agricultural Cooperative of Zagora Pelion is one of the most dynamic cooperatives in Greece, channeling over 23,000 tons of fresh fruit (apples, pears, kiwis and cherries) with over 20,000 tons of apples to both the domestic and international markets each year.
Apples constitute the 95% of the products it sells. In addition to these, it collects and trades pears, chestnut cherries, kiwis and in general small quantities from various types of tree crops that its members have.
The apples mainly belong to the PDO starking delicious variety. Also cultivated are other varieties of apples such as golden (PDO), fuji, gala, jona, reinette du Canada, and the PDO, since 2011, Phyrikia of Pelion, a variety recorded since the 18th century in the area.
In 2016, in collaboration with the Women’s Agritourism Cooperative of Zagora, was created the first processed product, Petimezi from PDO Phyrikia of Pelion. This product is a high nutritional value, palatable concentrate intended for use in various aspects of dietary options. Furthermore, the Organization is one of the suppliers of raw material for juicing apples from other companies.
